Donegal has a long history of distilling, and while the vast majority was classed as illegal, the county was renowned far and wide for the quality of spirits produced, namely the unregulated spirit – Poitín. In the 1850’s Donegal was thought to have more illicit stills than the rest of the country put together. Our mission at the Sliabh Liag Distillery is to reclaim the distilling heritage of Donegal, and to build a legacy that everyone can be fiercely proud of.
Silkie Irish Whiskey is an independent bottling blended to our specification, a super soft whiskey is inspired by the Silkie seals, magical creatures who took the form of beautiful dark-haired maidens on shore. An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin is the first gin distilled in Donegal, less than a mile from the coast in the village of Carrick. At the heart of An Dúlamán are give varieties of locally harvested shore botanicals. By using these unique plants, we harness what we call Draíocht na Farraige, the magic of the sea. Upon completion of our main distillery building, we will produce the Sliabh Liag Whiskies – a single malt and a pot still, both will be peated, reminiscent of the whiskies made in this part of Ireland in the past.
We are delighted to be awarded a Silver Medal for An Dúlamán, Irish Maritime Gin at the Berlin International Spirits Show. Silkie Irish Whiskey was awarded a bronze medal and the Distillery recognized too. It is exciting times for Donegal Gaeltacht.
