RTE’s Home Chef Programme
Award-winning chef, Neven Maguire, is Head Chef/Owner of MacNean House & Restaurant in Blacklion, Co. Cavan. Neven began cooking at 12 years of age in the kitchen of the restaurant which was then run by his parents. Neven took over MacNean House & Restaurant in 2001 and it is now one of Ireland’s top restaurants and luxury guest houses, consistently winning awards for its cuisine, wine offer and service.
One of Ireland’s most talented and innovative chefs, Neven has been named ‘Best Chef in Ireland’ at numerous awards. His MacNean House & Restaurant has also been presented with many awards for best dining and wine experience, food and hospitality. Neven has also won Best Food and Drink Blog in Ireland (see www.nevenmaguire.com).
This year, he was awarded The Restaurants Association of Ireland’s ‘Mike Butt Award’ in honour of his contribution to the tourism industry. Neven received the prestigious award for his dedication to promoting Irish food across the world.
MacNean House & Restaurant and the Neven Maguire Cookery School
Having trained and then tutored in professional cooking, Neven went on to work at some the world’s top restaurants including Arzac, San Sebastian, Spain (3 Michelin Stars) and Restaurant Léa Linster, Luxembourg (2 Michelin Stars) before taking over as Owner/Head Chef of MacNean House & Restaurant in 2001.
Fulfilling a long-held dream, Neven officially opened his ‘Neven Maguire Cookery School’ alongside his restaurant late 2013. The state-of-the-art cookery school features a range of exciting cookery classes for all skill levels, the popular Parent and Child courses and tours of Neven’s extensive vegetable and herb collection. Perfect for home cooks to aspiring chefs, all classes are presented by Neven and class sizes are kept small for a ‘hands-on’ experience.
In addition to the school, Neven has also launched his exclusive ‘Chef’s Table with Neven’ dining experience where Neven and his team cook in front of diners and present the restaurant’s acclaimed Tasting Menu. Accompanying wines are also presented and served by the restaurant’s sommelier.
Latest book and TV Series
His new recipe book is his biggest yet featuring 300 life-saving recipes for super busy parents. Neven Maguire’s Complete Family Cookbook is on shelves from October 7th.
His latest TV series of ‘Home Chef’ is being broadcast on RTÉ 1 from September and sees Neven visit his long-time favourite, the Spanish Basque region. His previous ‘Home Chef’ series are being shown in the US (on PBS) and the UK (Good Food Channel).
Neven as Ambassador
Neven was appointed as Ambassador with St. James Hospital, Dublin for its Target Lung Cancer Campaign in 2015. This is a cause especially close to Neven’s heart following the sad passing of his mum, Vera Maguire, to lung cancer in October 2012.
He has also been newly appointed as Ambassador for Dunnes Stores ‘Simply Better’ food collection and is currently touring the country meeting with the artisan producers and family businesses who work with the ‘Simply Better’ team and supply the very finest produce for the award-winning ‘Simply Better’ range.
